So there I was at Orchard Central, wondering what to eat. Unfortunately, one of my friends is an avid katsu fan, so we ended up going to Ootoya. Ootoya is a lot like Tonkichi; another Katsu restaurant, except Ootoya is a like a slightly lower-end version of Tonkichi. Correspondingly, the price level for Ootoya is lower as well. While Tonkichi is likely to cost you 30 odd; after factoring in the taxes, for an average meal, Ootoya is going to be several bucks cheaper than that.
So what does Ootoya have? Well, lots of beer and spirits. Lots of Katsu, some ramen and that's pretty much it.
I ended up ordering the deepfried pork cutlet with egg. It was decent, but the pork was a bit tough at times. Which isn't really a good thing for Katsu. You want the pork to be crispy but tender at the same time. As such, it loses to Tonkichi when it comes to taste.
On the plus side, there is unlimited refills of rice and pickles. Although the pickles are sorta iffy and rice is full of carbohydrates so I don't take too much of that either...
