So I've ended up watching the Spongebob Squarepants movie. And as someone who's never watched any Spongebob squarepants episodes before, this was a fairly....weird experience. But the trailer did seem pretty interesting...Unfortunately, the trailer lies...
See, my issue is that the trailer pretty much shows Spongebob and co. coming out of the water and becoming 3D animated and then becoming superheroes and fighting a pirate. This seemed pretty interesting and the humor was quirky enough that it felt like it would have been amusing to see.
However, what we actually got was maybe 20 minutes of CGI and 70 minutes of normal 2D animation and jokes that mostly only regular viewers of the show will get. I mean, where was the 'sponge out of water' part of the film title?
Overall, this was a pretty weak movie for non-Spongebob fans I guess. There are some humorous moments nonetheless but there really aren't enough to make the film entertaining instead of arduous at times. The build-up took too long to establish the plot and seemed to drag on quite a bit at times, with the climatic fight scene taking far too short really.
